Anglo Moranbah Mine Aims for a Swift Return to Operations Following an Underground Explosion

### Anglo Seeks Swift Re-entry at Moranbah Mine Following Underground Ignition

Operations were temporarily suspended following a small underground ignition at the **Moranbah North metallurgical coal mine** in Queensland, Australia. International mining company **Anglo American** is now working to stabilize the situation and safely resume mining operations as quickly as possible.

The incident occurred on **March 31** at the metallurgical coal mine, which produces coal used in steelmaking. The mine is part of the portfolio of assets that Anglo American has agreed to sell to **Peabody Energy** for **US$3.78 billion**.

According to Anglo American, conditions stabilized rapidly following the incident and have remained stable. Video footage and monitoring data indicate that **no damage has been identified**.

The company stated:

> “We are working with Resources Safety and Health Queensland to develop a staged re-entry plan and undertake risk assessments.”

Anglo American emphasized that **the safety of its employees remains the highest priority**, with the company aiming to resume operations safely and as promptly as possible.

### Peabody’s Position

Peabody Energy also issued a statement regarding the incident, saying that it is assessing all available options in accordance with the terms of the acquisition agreement.

### Acquisition Agreement – November 2024

The agreement includes:

* **US$2.05 billion** in upfront consideration;

* **US$725 million** in deferred consideration; and

* Up to **US$1 billion in additional contingent payments**, linked to the restart of suspended operations, including mines such as **Grosvenor**.

The sale of Anglo American’s coal assets forms part of the company’s broader **portfolio restructuring strategy**. Anglo American plans to exit its interests in **coal, nickel, platinum and diamonds**, while focusing its portfolio on **copper and iron ore**.
